It may have a noticeably sweet odor. Also look for a split hose, a loose hose connection, a damaged radiator, or coolant sprayed around the engine bay.

If the coolant reservoir is clearly low and you have the correct coolant available, adding coolant to the reservoir may help in a limited situation. Plain water can be used only as a temporary emergency measure when the engine is cool and the correct coolant is unavailable. It should not be treated as a permanent fix, especially during Michigan winters, because the proper coolant mixture protects against freezing, corrosion, and overheating.

Even if the temperature returns to normal after topping off the reservoir, a low level means coolant went somewhere. A leak, failing cap, water pump issue, or internal engine problem still needs diagnosis.

When It Is Safe to Drive and When to Call for a Tow

There is no single answer for every overheating vehicle. A car that briefly ran warm because the coolant reservoir was low may be able to travel a very short distance after it has fully cooled and the level has been corrected. But that choice carries risk. If the temperature starts rising again, stop immediately.

Call for a tow if steam is present, coolant is actively leaking, the warning light remains on, the engine runs rough, you hear knocking, or the temperature gauge quickly climbs back toward hot. A tow is also the sensible choice if you do not know why the car overheated. The cost and inconvenience are usually far less than the cost of a warped cylinder head, damaged head gasket, or seized engine.

Avoid these common mistakes: do not pour cold water over a hot engine, do not keep restarting the vehicle to see if the problem disappears, and do not rely on the temperature gauge returning to normal as proof that everything is fine. Some cooling-system failures come and go before becoming much worse.

Why Cars Overheat

Your engine produces a tremendous amount of heat. The cooling system moves coolant through the engine and radiator, where heat is released before the coolant cycles back through. When one part of that system cannot do its job, temperatures rise quickly.

A coolant leak is one of the most common causes. Leaks can come from hoses, clamps, the radiator, the water pump, the thermostat housing, the heater core, or the coolant reservoir. That is why guessing and replacing parts one at a time can become expensive.

Signs the Engine May Have Been Damaged

An overheating event does not automatically mean the engine is ruined. The severity depends on how hot it got, how long it ran hot, and the condition of the engine beforehand. Still, certain symptoms should be checked quickly.

Watch for persistent white exhaust smoke, a sweet smell from the exhaust, milky-looking engine oil, repeated coolant loss, rough running, misfires, reduced power, or bubbles in the coolant reservoir after the engine warms up. These can point to an internal coolant leak or head-gasket concern. Do not keep driving in hopes that the symptoms will clear up.

A trained technician can inspect the cooling system, check for leaks and proper pressure, test the thermostat and fans, examine the coolant condition, and assess whether combustion gases are entering the system. Finding the actual cause matters more than simply refilling coolant.
